Under the 1986 Education Act children are required to be in school for 190 days each academic year.
These are divided up into three terms:
| Autumn | September to December |
| Spring | January to Easter |
| Summer | April to July |
During each term there is a half term break of one week. Teachers are in school for a further five days for professional training (Inset days).
